Ghosting the Pressure: Letting Go of Unrealistic Expectations in Motherhood
CinnaMoms | A PHFE WIC Program

Halloween is the season for ghosts, tricks, and things that go bump in the night. Nevertheless, for many moms, some of the scariest things are not hiding in haunted houses- they are the everyday pressures of motherhood!
The pressure to have it all together. To keep the house clean, prepare healthy meals, raise happy children, show up for everyone, and still somehow find time for yourself.
For Black mothers especially, there is often an added expectation to be strong, independent, and capable of handling everything without missing a beat.
Between feeding little ones, navigating pregnancy or postpartum changes, and managing everyday responsibilities, motherhood can come with plenty of questions and challenges. That is why support systems like CinnaMoms are so important, offering nutrition education, healthy foods, breastfeeding support, and resources to help families along the way.
This blog is a little Halloween reminder from CinnaMoms: Some things deserve to be ghosted, and unrealistic expectations are at the top of the list!
This October, we are saying goodbye to a few motherhood pressures that have overstayed their welcome.
Ghosting the Perfect Mom Myth

Social media can make motherhood look picture-perfect. Spotless homes, matching outfits, homemade meals, and smiling children who apparently never have meltdowns!
But real motherhood? It is messy, unpredictable, beautiful, exhausting, and sometimes all of that before breakfast.
Your home does not have to be spotless. Not every meal has to be homemade. Some days, simply making it through the day is an accomplishment.
The truth: Your children do not need a perfect mom. They need love, care, connection, and someone who keeps showing up for them.
Ghosting Mom Guilt

Have you ever felt guilty for taking a break? Needed to order takeout instead of cooking? Or purposely taking some quiet time away from the kids?
Mom guilt has a sneaky way of showing up, even when you're doing your best.
However, taking care of yourself doesn't mean you're taking something away from your family. Rest, laughter, friendships, and time to recharge are important parts of your well-being and makes you an amazing mom.
The truth: You can love your children deeply and still need time for yourself. Both things can be true!
A tip: Self-care doesn't have to mean setting aside an entire day. Even a few minutes to recharge, connect with a friend, or ask someone you trust for help can make a difference. Think about one small way your village can support you this week. For additional guidance on finding emotional support, explore the Office on Women's Health's support resources, especially if you're navigating challenges during or after pregnancy.
Ghosting the Superwoman Expectation

Black women have long been celebrated for their strength, resilience, and ability to overcome challenges. While there is beauty in that strength, it can sometimes come with an unfair expectation to carry everything alone.
Being the one everyone depends on can feel rewarding, but it can also become exhausting.
You do not have to solve every problem, meet every need, or always have the answers. You deserve the same care and support you give so freely to others.
The truth: Being strong does not mean never needing help. Sometimes strength looks like saying, "I need a hand."
Ghosting the Comparison Game

Every baby develops differently. Every family has its own routines. Moreover, every motherhood journey comes with its own challenges and celebrations.
Maybe someone else's baby is sleeping through the night, their toddler is already talking up a storm, or moms seem to have breastfeeding completely figured out.
It is easy to wonder whether you are doing enough.
However, motherhood is not a competition, and another mom's journey does not determine the value of yours.
The truth: You and your little one are on your own journey. Celebrate your progress, ask questions when you need support, and remember that milestones are not a race.
A tip: Every child grows and develops at their own pace, but understanding developmental milestones can help you support their growth. Explore Little by Little's developmental resources and the CDC's Developmental Milestones to learn more about what to expect as your little one grows. If your child is missing milestones or you have concerns about their development, talk with their healthcare provider rather than waiting to see if they catch up.
Treat Yourself to a Little Grace
Now that we have ghosted a few pressures, let's make room for something better!
This season, give yourself permission to:
Celebrate the small wins, even if it's just getting everyone dressed and out the door.
Ask your village for help without feeling guilty.
Say no when your plate is already full.
Take a moment to rest, laugh, or do something you enjoy.
Remind yourself that you are learning and growing right alongside your children.
Don't forget, you deserve to be celebrated, too!
