Juneteenth is a powerful celebration of freedom, resilience, and Black joy. Observed every year on June 19, it honors the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Whether you’re new to Juneteenth or have been celebrating for years, here are a few family-friendly ways to reflect, learn, and celebrate together:

Celebrate with Food & Flavors

Food is a big part of Juneteenth! Traditional dishes often include red foods like watermelon, red velvet cake, hibiscus tea, and barbecue to represent strength and resilience. Cook or share a meal that honors the culture and brings everyone to the table.
